A kitchen remodel isn’t just all about making your space beautiful. Functionality also matters so you need to make the right choices for the kitchen design layout. This will help you ensure that the heart of your home is safe and accessible.
A leading remodeling and siding replacement expert shares key measurements in kitchen design.
Work Triangle
The work triangle minimizes the walking distance between the sink, refrigerator and cooking area. Ideally, the sum of the three distances should not be over 26 feet. Each leg of the triangle should be between four and nine feet, even in smaller kitchens. If at least two people cook, plan a triangle for each person. The triangles can share one leg but they shouldn’t intersect with each other. It would also help to avoid major traffic walkways cross through the triangle.
Doorways and Walkways
Doorways leading to the kitchen should be at least 32 inches wide. Swinging doors shouldn’t get in the way of cabinets, appliances, and other doors. Consider sliding doors if you have a small kitchen to avoid clearance problems and save space. Moreover, passageways through the kitchen should be more than 36 inches. It would be a good idea to make them even wider if you’re working on an open floor plan kitchen. Walkways in the work areas should be at least 42 inches wide for a single cook or 48 inches for at least two cooks. If you’re getting new doors, also consider a window replacement to complete your kitchen’s look.
Counters
Experts recommend having at least 158 inches of usable countertop space that is at least 24 inches deep and has at least 15 inches of clearance above. Allocate at least 15 inches of countertop space beside the handle side of the refrigerator or on both sides of a side-by-side refrigerator. If you have a kitchen layout with island appliances, extend the countertop at least nine inches past the burners. Also, include a 15-inch countertop space on either side of a separate oven.
